WWTP El Ahogado: First WWTP in Mexico With Its Own Monofil

Introduction

The Wastewater Treatment Plant “El Ahogado” treats 20% of the wastewater from the Guadalajara metropolitan area, equivalent to 1 million people, under a BOT scheme that considers the design, construction, financing, operation and maintenance of the project for 17 years.

The main processes include: pretreatment, primary treatment, biological treatment with nutrient removal, disinfection, sludge treatment, anaerobic digestion, sludge dewatering, odor control and cogeneration with biogas for the production of electrical energy and heat recovery.

Los principales procesos son: pretratamiento, tratamiento primario, tratamiento biológico, tratamiento de lodos, digestión anaeróbica, deshidratación de lodos y cogeneración con biogás para la producción de energía eléctrica y recuperación de calor.

Achievements

  • First WWTP in Mexico with sludge disposal and treatment at its own monofill
  • The WWTP uses electrical and thermal energy from the cogeneration system, through biogas fuel
